DESCRIPTION:Prof. Gareth Pender\, Heriot Watt University\, UK\nThe seminar
will present flood inundation modelling research undertaken by super work
package 1 of the Flood Risk Management Research Consortium (FRMRC). The F
RMRC is a multi-disciplinary\, multi-institutional research project funded
by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Envi
ronment Agency. The presentation will provide an overview of each of Super
Work Package 1’s technical work packages\, covering: • Hydrodynamic m
odelling to support enhanced flood risk management. • Inundation modelli
ng to support uncertainty analysis. • Rapid flood spreading. • Guidanc
e on uncertainty estimation in fluvial flood management. A detailed discus
sion will follow on those aspects of the research led by Heriot Watt Unive
rsity. Firstly\, the theory and implementation of rapid flood spreading wi
ll be discussed. Here simplified equations are used to provide extremely c
omputationally efficient predictions of flood inundation extent and flood
hazard. Such\, techniques are useful for national scale flood hazard predi
ction and uncertainty analysis. Secondly\, the outcomes of a benchmarking
exercise for two-dimensional flood inundation models will be presented. To
facilitate this\, a set of benchmark test cases have been developed. Thes
e are designed to differentiate between the performance characteristics of
the wide range of commercially available two-dimensional flood inundation
models. Conclusions will be drawn on the suitability of different model t
 ypes for practical application.
