DESCRIPTION:Prof. Samuel Arey\, LMCE\nThe Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill is c
hanging the way that we think about oil spills. It is not only the second
largest marine oil spill on record\, it is also the first major release of
oil in the deep water column. In this seminar I will discuss what has bee
n learned about the fate and behavior of petroleum hydrocarbons resulting
from a deep water oil release. Compared to conventional oil spills which o
ccur at or near the marine surface\, deep water oil releases have new impl
ications for chemical exposures of marine life. New measurement and modeli
ng approaches will be required to ascertain the resulting environmental im
pacts. The lessons we learn from the Deepwater Horizon incident are presci
ent\; deep offshore oil drilling is expected to increase\, and go into dee
per waters\, during the coming decades.
