DESCRIPTION:Gerbert Rüf Stiftung\nProgramme of the call:\nThe opportuniti
 es for the development of new tools in health care\, drug discovery\, the 
 environment\, agriculture and food production are increasingly limited by 
 the availability of novel chemical compounds. Innovative approaches and so
 lutions are needed.\nWhereas “biologics“ describes products extracted 
 from biological sources\, there is a far greater potential in the direct u
 se of micro-organisms – engineered viruses\, bacteria\, populations of m
 icrobes that work together in symbiosis – as a means of production\, tre
 atment and research. The use of microbial resources to produce desired eff
 ects within living organisms or in natural or man-made ecosystems bears po
 werful and underexploited tools.\nMany promising approaches that depend on
  microbial resources exist in industry\, yet the advent of rapid genomic s
 equencing and genome targeting opens up unprecedented opportunities in whi
 ch microorganisms\, including bacteria\, fungi\, algae\, protozoa and viru
 ses\, can be modified and applied.Support Criteria:\n\n		Application- and 
 impact-oriented\;\n	\n		Original\, innovative\, creative\;\n	\n		Interdisc
 iplinarity and cross-institutional collaborations\;\n	\n		Not merely addit
 ional (residual) financing of large initiatives\;\n	\n		Clear project iden
 tity\;\n	\n		2 to 3 years\, CHF 300\,000 to 500\,000\;\n	\n		No infrastruc
 ture financed\, only salaries and material costs linked to project.\nSubmi
 ssion of Projects: \n\n		The documents must be submitted by the leader of 
 the project management team.\n	\n		The application must include a letter o
 f endorsement from the Institute or Department Head*.\n	\n		The applicatio
