DESCRIPTION:Dr Alexander Bahr\nAutonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) have
become a powerful tool for underwater research. Over the last two decades
the technology has matured from simple prototypes to a great variety of ve
hicles capable of autonomously sampling and mapping hundreds of square kil
ometers of ocean floor to depths of 11000 m. They now hold great promise t
o accelerate the exploration of "the other 70%" of earth's biosphere which
today is mostly accessed conventionally through large and expensive resea
rch vessels. This talk will give an overview over the available AUV techno
logy today and its applications. It will outline the challenges to robots
in the underwater domain particularly in communication and localization/n
avigation and will propose a possible solution to the localization problem
.\n\nWe encourage everybody with a research interest in local water bodies
such as lake Geneva to think about how AUV technology could benefit the
ir current research and/or provide a possibility to address new research q
 uestions.
