Reduction in Civil Engineering\, Tongji University\, China\nUnder strong
earthquakes the performance and safety of engineering structures are of pa
ramount importance. In this scenario\, the structures usually exhibit stro
ng nonlinear behaviors\, and simultaneously\, there are large degree of ra
ndomness in both structural properties and seismic excitations. Such coupl
ing of nonlinearity and randomness in the analysis practical structures of
large degrees of freedom leads to great challenges. To this end\, in the
past over 10 years\, we developed a family of probability density evolutio
n method (PDEM)\, where the principle of preservation of probability is ad
vocated as a basis of stochastic dynamics\, and the physical mechanism/phy
sical equations are incorporated into the random event description of this
principle\, leading to the generalized density evolution equation. In con
trast to the traditional equations (e.g.\, FPK equation)\, this equation i
n a one-dimensional equation and therefore could be applied to complex sys
tems. Numerical methods were developed. Further\, combined with the stocha
stic damage constitutive law of concrete\, we implemented the stochastic s
eismic response and reliability evaluation of practical concrete structure
 s. Some engineering applications will be illustrated.\nBio : Jianbing Chen
is currently a full professor on the faculty at Tongji University in the
School of Civil Engineering. He specializes in the area of earthquake engi
neering\, stochastic dynamics and structural reliability. Specifically\, h
e is working on the development of probability density evolution method (P
DEM) for performance evaluation and reliability assessment of structures/e
ngineering systems involving randomness both in the system properties and
excitations. Dr. Chen received a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Tongji Un
iversity\, China in 2002. He has been a visiting scholar/visiting professo
r in the University of Southern California in USA (2006-2007)\, Taiwan Uni
versity of Science and Technology in China (2011)\, Aalborg University in
Denmark (2012)\, and Vienne University of Technology in Austria (2014). Dr
. Chen is the co-author of an English book titled “Stochastic Dynamics o
 f Structures” (John Wiley & Sons\, 2009)\, the co-author of 3 Chinese bo
oks and over 150 technical publications\, among which are nearly 110 peer-
reviewed journal papers\, in the fields of structural stochastic analysis
and reliability theory. He was selected into the “NCET Plan” of MOE of
China in 2007 and the “Dawn Plan (Shuguang Plan)” of Shanghai Municip
al Government in 2011\, was the recipient of Huo Ying Dong prize in 2012\,
and “National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Workers” of Ch
ina in 2014. He now also serves as a member of the Joint Committee on Stru
ctural Safety (JCSS)\, vice Chairman of the Random Vibration Committee of
the Chinese Society of Vibration Engineering (CSVE)\, Chairman of the Vibr
ation Mechanics Committee of the Shanghai Society of Theoretical and Appli
ed Mechanics (CSTAM)\, and in the editorial board of “Journal of Vibrati
on Engineering”. He was among the “Most Cited Chinese Researchers” i
 n 2014 and 2015.
