DESCRIPTION:Prof. José L. Torero\, University Edinburgh UK\nIt has been r
ecognized that urban development and the accompanying infrastructure needs
to be designed and maintained in a sustainable way. Much effort has been
made on understanding energy management\, life cycles and environmental su
stainability\; in contrast the role of safety (in specific fire safety) as
a threat to the sustainability of communities has been largely ignored. F
ire Safety is a complex problem that encompasses issues as diverse as stru
ctural behaviour\, toxicology or water management.\nFurthermore\, the spec
ific problems involved require time and length scale resolution that range
from the nano-metre and nano-second to the kilometres and hours. This pre
sentation will highlight the link between Fire Safety and sustainable deve
lopment. A series of examples will be selected to describe the fundamental
research areas being explored and the potential impact on urban developme
nt. The examples will include linking micro-pollutants to fire retardants
and its impact on fire management\, understanding of novel structural comp
onents and materials and their impact on construction and architecture\, t
he impact of urban development on Urban-Wildland-Interface (UWI) fires and
the impact of modern sensor technology on the structure of the fire servi
 ce.
