DESCRIPTION:Prof. Feschotte research focuses on mobile DNA\, genetic eleme
 nts able to integrate and often propagate within the genome. Found in near
 ly all organisms\, these elements often account for a sizeable fraction of
  the genetic material and contribute to the genetic diversity of the speci
 es. Recently\, Prof. Feschotte’s group has described how transposons are
  co-opted as regulatory elements in the human innate immune system. More g
 enerally\, his group addresses three fundamental questions at a genome-wid
 e scale: (1) What are the mechanisms allowing for the persistence of trans
 posons? (2) What is the biological significance of endogenous viruses and 
 what do they tell us about host-virus evolution? (3) What is the contribut
 ion of mobile DNA to the advent of new biological functions\, and in parti
 cular regulatory evolution?
