DESCRIPTION:Dr Tobias JONAS\, Head Snow Hydrology Research Group\, WSL Ins
titute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF\, Davos CH\nAbstract:\nThe dist
ribution of seasonal snowcover is known to be highly variable in space and
time. While data from longterm snow monitoring sites provide valuable inf
ormation about the temporal dynamics of snowcover formation and depletion\
, these data do not adequately describe the spatial variability of availab
le snow water resources. Snowcover models on the other hand can replicate
the spatial distribution of snow but often deviate from observations due t
o shortcomings related to input data and process representations within th
e models.\nTo provide accurate information about available snow water reso
urces in Switzerland at high spatial and temporal resolution\, we have dev
eloped a monitoring framework that combines different types of snowcover m
odels with data assimilation techniques to incorporate available observati
onal data. This system is primarily in use for operational snowmelt foreca
sting purposes but is also an excellent tool for deriving datasets of dist
ributed snow water resources for related research.Short biography:\nDiplom
a in Physics from the Fluid Dynamics Institute at Georg-August University
Göttingen\, Germany\;\nPh.D. from the Department of Environmental Science
s\, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ETHZ\;\nAt SLF/WSL since
2002\, head of the snow hydrology research group since 2006
