 ombinatorial chemistry\, will speak on the recent successes of his program
 me on accelerated drug discovery. Combinatorial libraries have been hyped 
 in the past\, but never by Houghten\, who has spent two decades redesignin
 g the approach to permit its being done properly. See the abstract\, below
 \, of his talk entitled ‘An Alternative Route to the Discovery of Radica
 lly New Drugs’. We tend to emphasise its last sentence. Houghten’s Tor
 rey Pines Institute has developed a small set of multiwell plates that mak
 e it easy for potential users to evaluate the suitability of his libraries
  to their needs and Torrey Pines has a very vigorous external collaboratio
 n programme\, now producing publications and patents\, which could be exte
