DESCRIPTION:Robert-Jan SLAGER\nLorentz Institute for Theoretical Physics\n
Leiden University\, NL\nTopological insulators have been in the forefront
of condensed matter for more than a decade\,\nculminating in a very active
field that is concerned with the search of novel and experimentally viabl
e\nforms of exciting topological order. In this talk I will revisit the co
ncept of the topological insulator\nfrom the perspective of the necessaril
y present space group symmetries and motivate the resulting\nconsequences
by analyzing the response to the unique probe of the translational symmetr
y breaking by\nthe underlying lattice: the dislocation. In addition to giv
ing rise to many new physical consequences\,\nthat go beyond the standard
lore associated with the conventional edge states and elucidate the obtain
ed\nclassification scheme\, I will show that these results also provide a
 route towards
