DESCRIPTION:Juhani Pallasmaa\, Harry Mallgrave\, Olaf Blanke\, Andrea S
 erino\, Isabella Pasqualini\, Tibor Joanelly\nArchitectonic space engage
s several aspects of embodiment. While embodiment is a well-studied phenom
enon in cognitive neuroscience\, little is known about the impact of archi
tecture on human behavior and self-consciousness. Here\, we propose a symp
osium that promotes empirical scientific methods for architecture\, studyi
ng the subjective experience of the body in space modulated by the facets
of the environment.\nVisuo-spatial effects of the arts on emotional states
have been investigated for more than a decade through neuroaesthetics. To
day knowledge about the effects of architecture on the body\, feelings\, e
motions and wellbeing is sparse. We argue that findings from neuroscience
can be implemented into the architectural design process to improve and en
hance the user’s experience of space. The symposium “empirical: embodi
ment in architecture & neuroscience” is dedicated to architects\, neuros
cientists and engineers\, who are interested in initiating a community cen
tred on space design. Architects and planners are facing today unprecedent
ed challenges – and\, in the same measure\, there are scientific and tec
hnological advancements under development that have not been tested for ar
 chitectural purposes yet.
