DESCRIPTION:Dr. Andrew Lundgren\, Max Planck Institut\, Hannover\, Germany
\nThe first observation of gravitational waves from the merger of two blac
k holes has recently been announced. I'll begin by explaining what gravita
tional waves are and how the detectors are able to measure distance change
s thousands of times smaller than a proton between mirrors kilometers apar
 t. Then I’ll talk about how the detection was made\, how we confirmed it
s astrophysical origin\, and how we measured its properties. I'll also giv
e a personal account of the first few hours and talk about prospects for t
 he future.
