DESCRIPTION:Chris Van der Walle\, University of California\, Santa Barbara
(US)\nABSTRACT\nHydrogen strongly affects the properties of electronic ma
terials\, and careful control of hydrogen during growth\, processing\, and
device operation is needed to tailor the electrical behavior. First-prin
ciples calculations have allowed us to investigate the many facets of hydr
ogen's interactions with materials. Systematic studies for a wide range o
f hosts have revealed general rules governing the behavior of hydrogen\, b
ut also produced intriguing surprises. In amorphous silicon\, hydrogen is
known to passivate defects\, but also to be involved in defect generation
. I will address a number of topics that are relevant for hydrogen-relate
d defect energetics and dynamics in silicon and amorphous silicon.
