DESCRIPTION:Prof. Allen B. MacKenzie\, Virginia Tech\nFor the last several
  years\, the idea of using dynamic spectrum access\n(DSA) strategies to ov
 ercome the artificial scarcity of radio\nfrequency spectrum has been popul
 ar among both regulators and\nresearchers in wireless communications and n
 etworking.  While many of\nthe problems associated with creating radios ca
 pable of DSA have been\nsolved\, fundamental challenges remain in creating
  and managing\nnetworks of such radio nodes. This talk will describe some 
 of the work\nthat we have done to address those challenges and will presen
 t ideas\nfor continued progress through the pursuit of improved experiment
 al\ncapabilities for wireless networking researchers.\n\nFirst\, we will b
 riefly describe the motivation for DSA in general and\nsome of the specifi
 c applications currently envisioned for DSA\nnetworks.  Then\, we will dis
 cuss the problems of topology control and\nmedium access control in DSA mo
 bile ad hoc networks.  Specifically\, we\nadvocate a broader view of topol
 ogy control than has been common in\nthe past\, by including the choice of
  link parameters such as channel\,\nrate\, and power in the pursuit of imp
 roving end-to-end network\nperformance.  We further advocate the need for 
 dynamic topology\ncontrol approaches that optimize the network topology dy
 namically to\naccommodate current traffic.  We discuss some of our initial
  work in\nthis area\, which includes approaches based on game theoretic mo
 dels\,\ngenetic algorithms\, and heuristics.  We also describe the shortco
 mings\nof work in this area --- most notably the failure to consider\noper
 ational issues associated with real networks.  This leads to our\ndiscussi
 on of medium access control\, in which we describe our work on\na multi-ch
 annel medium access control protocol for DSA.  Again\, we\npoint out a fla
 w that our work shares with much other work in this\narea --- the assumpti
 on of a common control channel --- and describe\nthe nascent development o
 f techniques to overcome this flaw.\n\nWith these problems as background\,
  we discuss the need for frameworks\nand platforms that make experimental 
 work with DSA networks more\naccessible to networking researchers.  We des
 cribe a simple proof-of-\nconcept DSA network that we constructed and disc
 uss the challenges\nassociated with currently available platforms for such
  experiments.\nFinally\, we discuss the requirements and potential archite
 cture of an\naccessible experimental platform for DSA networking research.
