DESCRIPTION:By : Diana Franklin - Director of Computer Science Education a
t CEMSE - University of ChicagoAbstract :\nThe lack of diversity in comput
er science has far-reaching consequences\, including unfilled jobs\, lower
product quality\, and continuing structural barriers to underrepresented
students. In this talk\, I draw on research in sociology\, psychology and
education to hypothesize why females in the United States do not pursue co
mputer science\, what obstacles those who do pursue it face\, and what stu
dents and faculty can do to recruit and retain females in computer science
.Bio :\nDiana Franklin is the Director of Computer Science Education at CE

professor (2002-2007) and associate professor with tenure (2007) in Comput
er Science at the California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obisp
o\, during which she held the Forbes Chair.  Her research interests inclu
de computing education research\, parallel programming and architecture\,
