DESCRIPTION:Prof. Chris Johnson\, University of Utah\nAs part of the PASC1
6 conference (Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing) currently under
way here at EPFL:\nWe live in an era in which the creation of new data is
growing exponentially such that every two days we create as much new data
as we did from the beginning of mankind until the year 2003. One of the gr
eatest scientific challenges of the 21st century is to effectively underst
and and make use of the vast amount of information being produced. Visual
data analysis will be among our most important tools to understand such la
rge and often complex data. In this talk\, I will present state-of-the-art
visualization techniques\, applied to important Big Data problems in scie
nce\, engineering\, and medicine.\nBio: Chris Johnson is the founding dire
ctor of the Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the Univer
sity of Utah where he is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and
holds faculty appointments in the Departments of Physics and Bioengineeri
ng. His research interests are in the areas of scientific computing and sc
ientific visualization. Professor Johnson founded the SCI research group i
n 1992\, which has since grown to become the SCI Institute\, employing ove
r 200 faculty\, staff and students. Professor Johnson serves on several in
ternational journal editorial boards\, as well as on advisory boards to na
tional research centers. Professor Johnson has received a number of awards
\, including the NSF Presidential Faculty Fellow (PFF) award from Presiden
t Clinton in 1995 and the Governor's Medal for Science and Technology from
Governor Michael Leavitt in 1999.\nHe is a Fellow of the American Institu
te for Medical and Biological Engineering\, a Fellow of the American Assoc
iation for the Advancement of Science\, and in 2009 he was elected a Fello
w of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and receive
d the Utah Cyber Pioneer Award. In 2010 he received the Rosenblatt Award f
rom the University of Utah and the IEEE Visualization Career Award.  In 2
012 he received the IEEE IPDPS Charles Babbage Award\, and in 2013 the IEE
E Sidney Fernbach Award. In 2014\, Professor Johnson was elected an IEEE F
 ellow.
