DESCRIPTION:Prof. Sierin Lim\, Nanyang Technological University\, Singapor
e\nBIOENGINEERING SEMINARAbstract:\nProtein cages can be engineered to tai
lor its function as carriers for therapeutic and diagnostic agents. They a
re formed by self-assembly of multiple subunits forming hollow spherical c
age structures of nanometer size. Due to their proteinaceous nature\, the
protein cages allow facile modifications on its internal and external surf
aces\, as well as the subunit interfaces. Modifications on the internal an
d the external surfaces allow conjugation of small molecule drugs or contr
ast agent and targeting ligands\, respectively. The subunit interaction is
of special interest in engineering controlled release property onto the p
rotein cage. In this presentation\, I will focus on a protein cage represe
ntative that is ferritin from Archaeoglobus fulgidus as an MRI contrast ag
ent and a multiple display platform for potential vaccine application.Bio:
\nSierin Lim is an associate professor of bioengineering and the Assistant
Chair (Research) at the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering\, N
anyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore. She earned her B.S. in Ch
emical Engineering and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from University of
California Los Angeles (UCLA) and did a postdoc at University of Californi
a Irvine Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science.\nHer Bi
oengineered and Applied Nanomaterials Laboratory (BeANs Lab) at NTU focuse
s on the design and engineering of hybrid nano/microscale devices from bio
logical parts by utilizing protein engineering as a tool for applications
 in medicine (therapeutics\, diagnostics\, and vaccine)\, energy\, cosmetic
s\, and food. She is the founding chair and advisor to the Biomedical Engi
neering Society (Singapore) Student Chapter and is one of the STEM ambassa
dors at Singapore Committee for UN Women. She is also serving on the edito
rial board of Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and advisory b
oard of biotechin.asia. In 2012 she received the Asia Pacific Research Net
working Fellowship from the International Federation for Medical and Biolo
gical Engineering (IFMBE) and in 2013 the L’Oréal-UNESCO Singapore for
 Women in Science National Fellowship.
