 ly\, social-networking applications have started to appear on\nmobile phon
 es. These applications can exploit a phone's positioning\ncapabilities to 
 facilitate interaction between people. From a privacy\npoint of view\, thi
 s trend is troublesome because it often results in\nthe provider of a soci
 al-networking application having real-time\naccess to users' location. In 
 turn\, a user's location could reveal\ninformation about her activities or
  interests to the provider. I will\noutline two solutions that protect a u
 ser's location privacy. The\nfirst solution allows a user to become aware 
 of a friend who happens\nto be nearby without the friend and the user bein
 g able to track each\nother continuously and without a centralized party b
 eing able to track\neither of them. The second solution allows a user to a
 ccess a\nlocation-based service (e.g.\, a service that provides a listing 
 of\npoints of interest close to the user) such that the server cannot\ndis
 tinguish between the user issuing the query and other nearby\nusers. Both 
 of the presented solutions are based on cryptography and\nhave been implem
 ented and evaluated. The prototype implementation of\nour privacy-protecti
 ng application for alerting people of nearby\nfriends is available at .\n\
 nUrs Hengartner is an assistant professor in the David R. Cheriton\nSchool
  of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo\, Canada.  His\nresearc
 h interests are in information privacy and in computer and\nnetworks secur
 ity. His current research goals are to increase the\nsecurity of emerging 
 computing environments\, such as pervasive\ncomputing\, location-based ser
 vices\, and electronic voting\, and to\ndesign privacy-enhancing technolog
 ies for people who want to benefit\nfrom these environments. He has a degr
 ee in computer science from ETH\nZurich and an M.S. and Ph.D. in computer 
 science from Carnegie Mellon.
