DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christos Doulkeridis\, Norwegian University of Science and
Technology (NTNU)\nAbstract: Lately the advances in centralized database
management systems show a trend towards supporting rank-aware query operat
ors\, such as top-k\, that enable users to retrieve only a limited set of
the most interesting data objects. A challenging problem is to support ran
k-aware queries in highly distributed environments. In this talk\, I will
present a framework (named SPEERTO) for top-k query processing in large-sc
ale super-peer networks\, under the assumption of horizontal data distribu
tion over the peers. A key observation of this work is the applicability o
f the skyline operator for efficiently routing top-k queries in a P2P syst
ems. Relying on a thresholding scheme\, SPEERTO returns the exact results
progressively to the user\, while the number of queried super-peers and tr
ansferred data is minimized. In addition\, I will present ongoing research
on non-traditional top-k queries for centralized domains\, where the focu
s is on the side of the producer rather than the consumer. \n\nShort Bio:
Christos Doulkeridis is a post-doctoral researcher under an "Alain Bensous
san" fellowship in the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTN
 U) in the group of professor Kjetil Noervaag. In 2007 he concluded his PhD
entitled "Organizing and Searching Data in Unstructured P2P Networks" in
the Department of Informatics\, Athens University of Economics and Busines
s (AUEB)\, under the supervision of associate professor Michalis Vazirgian
nis. Prior to this\, he received a Master of Science in Information System
s at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB\, 2003) and a D
iploma from the department of Electrical Engineering at the National Techn
ical University of Athens (NTUA\, 2001). His research interests include da
 ta \nmanagement in peer-to-peer systems\, distributed knowledge discovery\
, mobile and context-aware computing\, web services and semi-structured da
 ta.
