DESCRIPTION:Prof. J. Christoper Love\, Massachusetts Institute of Technolo
gy\, Cambridge\, MA (USA)\nDISTINGUISHED LECTURE IN BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING
\n(sandwiches served)\n\nAbstract:\nThe advance of technologies that use n
anoliter-scale volumes in microfabricated systems to isolate individual ce
lls is enabling new capabilities for measuring multiple attributes of each
\, including genomic\, phenotypic and functional characteristics.  These
technologies also provide an opportunity to examine intercellular interact
ions among discrete numbers of cells\, allowing measurements of cooperativ
ity and time-dependent activities.  This talk will describe a technology
platform based on arrays of subnanoliter wells\, and associated methods\,
that allow integrated measurements of cellular traits.  Applications of t
his platform to examine cellular phenotypes and interactions of immune cel
ls will be discussed.  The capabilities provide new approaches to the dis
covery of rare cells and novel biomarkers in disease.\n\nBio:\nJ. Christop
her Love is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Koch Ins
titute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT.  He is also an Associate M
ember of the Broad Institute\, and an Associate Member at the Ragon Instit
ute of MGH\, MIT\, and Harvard. Love earned a B.S. in chemistry from the U
niversity of Virginia and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at Harvard Univers
ity under the supervision of George Whitesides. Following completion of hi
s doctoral studies\, he extended his research into immunology at Harvard M
edical School with Hidde Ploegh from 2004-2005\, and at the Immune Disease
Institute from 2005-2007. Dr. Love was a W.M. Keck Distinguished Young Sc
holar for Medical Research and a Dana Scholar for Human Immunology in 2009
\, a Life Sciences Research Foundation Postdoc Fellow (Gilead Sciences) in
2004\, and a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellow fro
m 1999-2002. He was also awarded the Foresight Distinguished Student Award
in Nanotechnology in 2000. Love is also a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar
