DESCRIPTION:Prof. Coronas Joaquin\nChemical and Environmental Engineering
Department and Instituto de Nanociencia de Aragon (INA)\, Universidad de Z
aragoza\, Zaragoza\, Spain\nCurrent polymer membrane materials applied for
gas separation are not good enough to satisfy the permeability-selectivit
y requirements: there is a trade-off between both parameters that limits i
ts application\, even though gas seperation membranes are much more energy
efficient than other gas separation technologies. MOF (metal-organic fram
ework) based membranes (both mixed matrix membranes and continuous membran
es) could constitute the definitive separation systems to afford this chal
lenge task. MOFs are porous crystalline organic/inorganic materials with p
ore apertures ranging from 0.3 nm to 1.7 nm\, i.e. appropriate to produce
molecular sieving and preferential absorption effects\, promoting the sepa
 ration of\, for instance\, precombustion (H2/CO2) and postcombustion (CO2/
 N2) mixtures.
