DESCRIPTION:Prof. Ricardo Bianchini\, Rutgers University\, Piscataway\, US
A\nIn 2006\, the data centers in the United States consumed 61.4 Billion K
Whs\, an amount of energy that is equivalent to that consumed by the entir
e transportation manufacturing industry. Worse\, under current efficiency
trends\, this gigantic amount of energy will have nearly doubled by 2011 f
or an overall electricity cost of $7.4 Billion per year. In the first part
of this talk\, I will discuss these trends\, identify the major energy co
nsumers in data centers\, and overview the approaches that have been propo
sed to manage their energy consumption. In the second part\, I will introd
uce a new management approach that caps energy consumption over a period o
f time\, while minimizing costs and satisfying all service-level agreement
 s. The approach relies on workload prediction\, mathematical optimization\
, and statistical performance data. The research described in the talk is
being done in collaboration with Ozlem Bilgir\, Kien Le\, Margaret Martono
 si\, and Thu Nguyen.\nProf. Bianchini's homepage
