DESCRIPTION:Prof. Alcherio Martinoli\nIn this talk\, I will first highligh
t the challenges related to the design\, control\, evaluation\, optimizati
on\, and scalability of distributed robotic systems. In particular\, I wil
l describe selected distributed intelligent algorithms and corresponding m
odel-based and data-based methods we have developed in order to analyze an
d optimize their performances. I will support the discussion with a few re
cent case studies concerned with distributed sensing and manipulation miss
ions\, in particular using miniature robots. In the second part of the tal
k\, I will first extrapolate a few lessons we learned from distributed rob
otics and show how some of the methods developed can be applied to further
domains of interest in the broader area of distributed\, intelligent syst
ems ranging from sensor and actuators networks to micro- and nano-systems.
