DESCRIPTION:Professor Michel Bruneau\, Department of Civil\, Structural a
 nd Environmental Engineering\, State University of New York at Buffalo (SU
 NY)\nAbstract\nA steel plate shear wall (SPSW) consists of infill steel pa
 nels surrounded by boundary beams and columns. These panels are allowed to
  buckle in shear and subsequently form diagonal tension fields. The select
 ion of SPSW as the primary lateral force resisting system in buildings has
  become more popular in recent years\, and SPSW have been used increasingl
 y as practicing engineers discover the benefits of this option. Recent exp
 erimental and analytical research on the seismic behavior of thin plate SP
 SW has led to a significantly improved understanding of the seismic behavi
 or of this structural system. This presentation will provide an introducti
 on to the design of SPSW\, an overview of the recent research conducted at
  the University at Buffalo that has led to specific design recommendations
  implemented in relevant design codes and standards)\, and recent findings
  on an innovative resilient self-centering SPSW concept.About the speaker\
 nDr. Bruneau has conducted extensive research on the design and behavior o
 f steel structures subjected to earthquakes and blasts\, and has received 
 many awards for his work. This research has encompassed contributions to t
 he development and large-scale experimental validation of various metallic
  energy-dissipating design concepts to enhance the resilience of structure
 s against extreme events\, including work on ductile steel plate shear wal
 ls\, ductile bridge diaphragms\, tubular eccentrically braced frames\, str
 uctural fuses\, composite piers/walls/shafts\, and controlled-rocking pier
 s.  Some of his innovative design concepts have been implemented in struc
 tures worldwide\, such as in the $1B temporary supports of the new San-Fra
 ncisco Oakland Bay Bridge East Span.  He has authored over 400 technical 
 publications\; in particular\, he is the lead author of the textbook “Du
 ctile Design of Steel Structures” that is widely used by structural engi
 neers. Dr. Bruneau is an ASCE Fellow\, a member of various AISC and CSA co
 mmittees developing design specifications for bridges and buildings\, has 
 conducted numerous reconnaissance visits to disaster stricken areas\, and 
 has served as Director of MCEER. He has also participated in various exper
 t peer review panels\, project advisory committees\, and special project d
