 at EPFL\nAbstract: Moment resisting frames must comply with a minimum beam
  span-to-depth ratio recommended by codes to ensure formation of plastic h
 inges at beam ends with adequate length. This limitation is at odds with t
 he need for shorter spans in order to control lateral drifts. The requirem
 ent also limits the application of moment resisting frames mostly in frame
 d-tube structures. To ease the limitation\, this presentation proposes a s
 hear fuse at the beam mid-span\, comprising a replaceable beam with a smal
 ler cross-section than that of the main beam. The shear fuse dissipates en
 ergy by shear yielding and thus\, prevents or delays the flexural yielding
  of beam ends. The system can also be used for the purpose of rehabilitati
 on of existing moment resisting frames that have been already damaged\, by
  weakening some portion of the beam. The presentation comprises the backgr
 ound theory\, results of the tests\, and application and optimization of t
 he proposed system in buildings.\n\n\nBio:Kiarash M. Dolatshahi is Assista
 nt Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at Sharif University of T
 echnology since 2012. He has received his Ph.D. from State University of N
 ew York at Buffalo in 2012. The topic of his Ph.D. dissertation is “Comp
 utational\, Analytical and Experimental Modeling of Masonry Structures”.
  His research focuses on earthquake resistant design of steel structures a
 nd modeling of masonry structures.\n
