DESCRIPTION:By: Noga Alon - Tel Aviv University Video of his talk: http://
 slideshot.epfl.ch/play/icc_alon\n\nAbstract:\nThe sign-rank of a real matr
 ix A with no 0 entries is the minimum rank of a matrix B so that A_{ij}B_{
ij} >0 for all i\,j. The study of this notion combines combinatorial\, alg
ebraic\, geometric and probabilistic techniques with tools from real algeb
raic geometry\, and is related to questions in Communication Complexity\,
Computational Learning and Asymptotic Enumeration. I will discuss the topi
c and describe its background\, several recent results from joint work wit
h Moran and Yehudayoff\, and some intriguing open problems.  \n\nBio:\nNo
ga Alon is a Baumritter Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science in
Tel Aviv University\, Israel. He received his Ph. D. in Mathematics at th
e Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has been multiple times a visiting pr
ofessor in the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Since 2009 he is
also a member of Microsoft Research\, Israel.\n\nHis research interests a
re mainly in Combinatorics\, Graph Theory and their applications in Theore
tical Computer Science. His main contributions include the study of expand
er graphs and their applications\, the investigation of derandomization te
chniques\, the foundation of streaming algorithms\, the development and ap
plications of algebraic and probabilistic methods in Discrete Mathematics
and the study of problems in Information Theory\, Combinatorial Geometry a
nd Combinatorial Number Theory.\n\nHe published more than five hundred res
earch papers and is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and of the
Academia Europaea. He received the\nErdos Prize\, the Feher Prize\, the Po
lya Prize\, the Bruno Memorial Award\, the Landau Prize\, the Goedel Prize
\, the Israel Prize\, the EMET Prize\,\nthe Dijkstra Prize and Honorary Do
ctorates from ETH Zurich and from the University of Waterloo.  \n\nMore i
