 he Institute of Technology - Germany\nThe emergence of 3D additive manufac
 turing technologies has enabled the fabrication of meta-materials with mic
 ro-architectures designed\, for instance\, for achieving specific optical 
 or mechanical properties. In our work\, we have designed and fabricated hi
 gh-strength nano-lattice structures by applying 3D direct laser writing. T
 he structures consist of polymeric trusses with typical diameters in the r
 ange of 1 µm [1]. In order to enhance the strength of these structures\, 
 different strategies have been employed: (i) coating with ceramic films by
  atomic layer deposition with thicknesses between 10 and 100 nm\; (ii) bak
 ing of the polymers by moderate thermal treatments\; and pyrolysis by a hi
 gh-temperature treatment. For the latter\, it is found that the pyrolysis 
 leads to the formation of glassy carbon structures with exceptional proper
 ties [2]. With respect to the mechanical behavior of these truss structure
 s\, it will be shown that the specific strength\, i.e. the ratio of streng
 th to density\, exceeds those of all natural and man-made cellular solids.

 people.  His research interests have a focus on studying deformation and 
 degradation mechanisms in nanomaterials for a wide range of applications f
 rom MEMS and microelectronics to energy conversion and storage. Oliver Kra
 ft graduated from the University of Stuttgart in 1995 in materials science
 . From 1996 to 1997\, he was a post-doc in Prof. W.D. Nix’s research gro
 up in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford Univ
 ersity. Oliver Kraft also worked as a research scientist at the Max-Planck
 -Institut für Metallforschung in Stuttgart from 1997 to 2002. From 2011 t
 o 2015\, he was speaker of the Helmholtz-Program Science and Technology of
  Nanosystems\, as part of the German national lab system\, the program fun
 ds and coordinates efforts in nanotechnology at KIT. For the Materials Res
 earch Society\, he has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2011 
 and has served in 2015 as President of the society.
