DESCRIPTION:Prof. Riccardo Fini\, University of Bologna\n"Knowledge Creati
on in Research Organizations: The Impact of Hybrid Entrepreneurship on Ind
ividual Performance"\n\nRésumé\nWe study how hybrid entrepreneurship –
pursuing entrepreneurship while retaining full-time employment – affect
s an individual’s performance relative to peers in research organization
 s. Building on research that links learning and relative performance\, we
argue that hybrid entrepreneurship increases the likelihood of achieving t
op research performance\, and we posit that this relationship is facilitat
ed by both the exploration of new scientific domains and improvements in m
ean scientific quality. Furthermore\, we argue that an entrepreneur’s es
tablished interpersonal relationships with distant others inside the resea
rch organization constrains the mediating effect of exploration and enhanc
es the mediating effect of mean scientific quality on the chances of achie
ving top research performance. Socialization within an organization theref
ore represents a boundary condition for the performance-enhancing effect o
f becoming a hybrid entrepreneur. Using panel data on 9\,502 academics emp
loyed between 2001 and 2011 at Imperial College London\, we find support f
or our hypotheses. The findings have implications for understanding the va
lue of engaging in hybrid entrepreneurship\, the role of socialization for
achieving top performance in research organizations\, and the antecedents
and consequences of exploration at the individual level.
