 mportant impact on the global drinking water situation in the coming decad
 es. Evidently\, climate change has an influence on temperature\, but also 
 on precipitation patterns and thus influences the fresh water availability
  in several ways. Other stress factors include demographic developments an
 d scarcity of energy resources. On the other hand\, opportunities exist in
  the form of new technologies\, globalization and increased consumer invol
 vement. Furthermore\, an additional challenge exists by the global commitm
 ent to address the MDGs (Millenium Development Goals) to reduce the number
  of people suffering from hunger or lack of safe drinking water. The chall
 enges\, the opportunities and possible solutions will be discussed. Some e
 xamples will be given from the area of technology provided.
