DESCRIPTION:Dr Martin Ackermann\, EAWAG\nMost microbes live in groups\, an
 d most microbial groups are composed of individuals that differ in their b
 iological properties. If these different types of individuals perform spez
 ialized tasks and engage in division of labor\, the group as a whole can a
 quire new functions. We are interested in the division of labor in microbi
 al communities. I will present current work on how clonal populations of p
 athogenic bacteria divide labor to infect their hosts. And I will discuss 
 future plans for investigating the division of labor in experimental and n
 atural microbial communities\, and for employing groups of job-sharing bac
 teria for applied purposes.
