 nces in materials for structural applications have pushed the need for mec
 hanical testing at the micro and nanoscale. This workshop aims to introduc
 e the emerging techniques in the field of in-situ micron scale testing wit
 h special emphasis on nanoindentation and micropillar compression. The bas
 ics of nanoindentation will be introduced. Case studies of in-situ mechani
 cal tests will be presented to cover not only hardness and modulus measure
 ments but also emerging experimental techniques that enable extraction of 
 fracture toughness\, time dependent plasticity (creep\, relaxation and str
 ain rate sensitivity) and fatigue properties at the micron scale.
