DESCRIPTION:Dr. Olaia Naveiras\nSeminar of the Institute of Bioengineering
\n\nAbstract:\nThe promise of regenerative medicine depends on succeeding
at generating sufficient amounts of functional\, transplantable tissue by
reliably differentiating pluripotent stem cells through the paths of ontog
eny\, or by efficiently expanding adult stem cells in vitro. For that purp
ose\, the environmental cues responsible for cell fate decisions in vivo n
eed to be deciphered and reproduced in vitro. We have focused on the hemat
opoietic system as the best characterized stem cell model system\, and pre
sent here two novel modulators of the embryonic and adult hematopoietic mi
croenvironment: biomechanical forces\, and specifically shear stress\, as
hematopoietic determinants in the developing aorta\, and bone marrow adipo
cytes as negative regulators of the hematopoietic milieu.
