 oup and the EPFL-Proteomics Core Facility.\n \nShort Abstract: SILAC (stab
 le isotope labeling of amino acids in cell culture) has unique advantages 
 for quantitative and functional proteomics because of its inherent accurac
 y of quantitation and the ease of interpretation of mass-spectrometry (MS)
  results. In a SILAC experiment two cell populations are generated\, one i
 n a medium that contains the natural amino acid (i.e. 12C6-lysine) and the
  other in a medium that contains the heavy isotope-substituted version (i.
 e. 13C6-lysine). This allows direct comparison of protein expression level
 s by mixing the non-labeled ‘light’ and labeled ‘heavy’ cell popul
 ations. To date SILAC-labeling has been focused mainly to cell culture or 
 microorganisms. I will talk about whether and to what extent whole mice ca
 n be labeled by SILAC. Furthermore\, I will talk about the estimation of p
 rotein turnover rates and the analysis of knock-out mouse proteomes. The f
 ocus will be on the analysis of blood cells lacking expression of b1 integ
 rin or integrin tail binding protein Kindlin-3. I will show that the absen
 ce of Kindlin-3 results in structural defects of erythrocytes.\n\nThe semi
 nar is a unique opportunity to learn about what modern quantitative proteo
 mics techniques like SILAC can bring to the study of knock-out mouse pheno
 types at the protein expression level.\n\nPeople interested in meeting Dr.
