DESCRIPTION:Dr Jean-Luc Starck\, Head of the CosmoStat Laboratory\, CEA-Sa
clay\, France\nSince the dawn of time\, humans have been wondering about t
heir place in the Universe.  Over the past century\, advances in modern p
hysics\, technology and engineering\, along with the unique possibilities
offered by space missions\, have opened new windows to explore the cosmos.
All-sky surveys\, with observations across the entire electromagnetic spe
ctrum\, are the best strategy to fully understand and model the Universe i
n detail. Major upcoming research facilities\, such as the Large Synoptic
Survey Telescope (LSST)\, the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and the Euclid
space telescopes will provide key elements to addressing this challenge\,
by producing high quality data of petabyte volumes.\n\nThese surveys prove
to be a major “big data" challenge\, which require the development of i
nnovative statistical methods essential both for the data analysis and the
ir physical interpretation. I will present some highlights of this methodo
logy and more specifically show how novel techniques of sparsity and compr
essed sensing open new perspectives in analysing cosmological data. These
enable us to answer fundamental questions about the nature of our Universe
with impressive accuracy.\n\nBio: Jean-Luc Starck is Director of Research
and head of the CosmoStat laboratory at CEA-Saclay\, France. He obtained
his Ph.D from Nice Observatory in 1992 and an Habilitation from University
Paris XI in 1999. He was a visitor at the European Southern Observatory i
n 1993\, at UCLA in 2004 and at Stanford in 2000 and 2005. Since 1994\, he
has been a tenured researcher at CEA\, where in  2010 he founded the Cos
moStat laboratory\, an interdisciplinary research group with a focus on in
dustry-academia partnership.\n\nProf. Starck has been heavily involved in
many ESA space missions\, including the upcoming Euclid space mission. He
is the recipient of the 2011 EADS prize of the French Academy of Science.
He has published over 200 refereed papers in astrophysics\, cosmology\, si
gnal processing\, and applied mathematics\, as well as three textbooks.
