DESCRIPTION:Manuel Mameli\, Department of Fundamental Neurosciences\, Facu
lty of Biology and Medicine\, UNIL\, Switzerland\nStress-related experienc
e trigger circuit reorganisation\, and if persistent contributes to the em
ergence of depressive symptoms. Therefore understanding the cellular basis
of stress can ultimately lead to the identification of substrates potenti
ally relevant for therapeutic interventions for depression. The lateral ha
benula\, an epithalamic structure\, encode negative stimuli and its dysfun
ction contributes to aspects of depressive-like phenotypes.\nOur laborator
y collected evidence indicating that stressors of different nature not onl
y modify habenular activity but that this occurs via a reduction of inhibi
tory transmission. I will discuss the cellular event leading to habenular
hyperactivity and discuss potential pharmacological or stimulation-based a
pproaches that might have a therapeutical value.\n \n
