DESCRIPTION:Prof. Berend Smit\nDirector of the Energy Center and Laborator
y of molecular simulation\, Faculty of Basic Science\, EPFL\nIt is now pos
sible to make an enormous spectrum of different\, novel nanoporous materia
ls simply by changing the building blocks in the synthesis of Metal Organ
ic Frameworks (MOF) or related materials. This unique chemical tunability
allows us to tailor-make materials that are optimal for a given applicati
on. The promise of finding just the right material seems remote however: b
ecause of practical limitations we can only ever synthesize\, characteriz
e\, and test a tiny fraction of all possible materials. To take full advan
tage of this development\, therefore\, we need to develop alternative tec
hniques\, collectively referred to as Materials Genomics\, to rapidly scre
en large numbers of materials and obtain fundamental insights into the ch
emical nature of the ideal material for a given application. In this prese
ntation we will show how one can use this approach to find materials for
a range of different energy-related applications.
