DESCRIPTION:Dr Yves Prairie\, visiting professor SBER & APHYS\, UNESCO Cha
ir in Global Environmental Change\, Université du Québec\, Montréal (Ca
nada)\n\nShort biography:\nYves Prairie is professor of limnology at the U
niversité du Québec à Montréal where he holds a UNESCO Chair in Global
Environmental Change. His research focuses on carbon cycling in aquatic e
cosystems\, ranging from gas exchange\, carbon export from catchments\, ca
rbon sedimentation\, and microbial transformation\,  generally from an ec
osystem perspective. He is particularly interested in the role played by i
nland waters on the global carbon budget. He is currently a visiting profe
ssor at EPFL working with Profs. Tom Battin and Johny Wuest.\nAbstract:\nI
nland waters are now recognized as important sites of methane production a
nd emissions\, even at the global scale. However\, the large variability o
bserved both within and among systems has made it particularly difficult t
o obtain precise estimates of emissions such that the methane footprint to
the atmosphere is rather poorly constrained. In this talk I will present
some recent work on lakes and reservoirs attempting to accounting for this
variability by modeling the physical and biological controls on the produ
ction and consumption mechanisms. These models were developed from several
field campaigns designed to identify the main drivers of CH4 production\,
oxidation and spatial heterogeneity. These models can then serve as the b
asis for the upscaling of methane fluxes to entire regions.\n
