DESCRIPTION:Ivan Izmestiev\nThe discrete Hilbert-Einstein functional is a
discrete-geometric analog of the total scalar cur-\nvature. It was discove
red by the physicist Tullio Regge in 1960\, but the ideas go back to\nStei
ner\, Schlaefli\, and Minkowski. The variational properties of the discret
e Hilbert-Einstein\nfunctional are similar to those of its smooth counterp
art. I will describe some applications to the rigidity of manifolds and po
lyhedra and formulate some open questions.
