DESCRIPTION:Prof. Michael Jacobides\, London Business School\n"Towards a t
heory of Business Ecosystems"\n\nAbstract\nGiven the recent surge of inter
est in “ecosystems” (often based on “platforms”) in strategy resea
rch\, we critically investigate this literature. We consider the various c
onceptualizations\, their common ground\, and their contrasts. We examine
the structure of relationships between ecosystem participants\, and the de
gree of mutual adaptation\, shape ecosystem structure and behavior\, and a
sk what is distinct about ecosystems compared to other\, existing types of
work. As such\, we consider the overlap of this new stream of work with e
stablished theories covering\, among others\, complementary assets\, netwo
rks and alliances\, identifying strong promise as well as pitfalls. We con
clude with proposals on improving terminological clarity and consistency\,
and identify promising paths for future research on these topics and impl
 ications for mainstream strategy research.
