DESCRIPTION:Prof. Bimal Kumar Department of Construction Processes and Pra
ctice Glasgow Caledonian University\, Glasgow\, United Kingdom\nThis prese
ntation will give an overview of some of the challenges and issues prevale
nt in construction industries in most parts of the world and how they can
be potentially addressed by a structured digitisation and information mana
gement. Generally speaking\, the construction industry\, in most parts of
the world\, is plagued by low productivity\, low margins and litigation. L
ately\, BIM (Building Information Modelling) has been proposed as a panace
a for some of these challenges. However\, there is still a lot of ‘myste
ry’ surrounding what BIM is and indeed how it could solve some of the pe
rennial challenges in this industry. This presentation will attempt to dem
ystify BIM and present a case for structured information management during
the entire lifecycle of a built asset as potentially a way forward for ad
dressing some of these challenges. The seminar will be divided into four k
ey parts\, viz. an overview of issues in the construction industry\, funda
mentals of BIM with some case studies\, implications of BIM-driven project
delivery on education and training and some advanced research around BIM.
