DESCRIPTION:Liam Bates\nCo-founder and CEO of Origins Technology\nAbstract
“If you can’t measure it\, you can’t manage it”. Air pollution is
an enormous problem worldwide\, claiming more than 7 million lives per ye
ar. In the quest to improve air quality\, one of the hardest problems can
be working out where exactly the pollution is coming from. Smart city ini
tiatives have long been pushing for a vast network of connected sensors to
monitor air pollution\, but many of these projects are slow to pick up\,
and often end up abandoned\, due to misalignment of each parties’ inter
ests and goals. Origins Technology designs air quality monitors aimed dire
ctly at consumers\, and in the process has accelerated the distribution of
such sensors. There are currently over 10\,000 monitors distributed in t
he city of Beijing alone\, providing tens of thousands of times more data
than any official/governmental monitoring stations. Liam will talk about t
he techniques used to collect this data\, the engineering\, scientific an
d political challenges faced\, and the solutions to air pollution that are
being created by this data.\n\nBiography\nLiam Bates (李牧) is an entr
epreneur and adventurer from Switzerland. He is the co-founder and CEO of
Origins Technology\, a Beijing-based startup. Origins is focused on devel
oping smart devices to monitor and map air quality\, both indoors and out
doors\, with the goal of better understanding\, and finally reducing the w
orld’s air pollution. Liam’s work at Origins is mostly focused on prod
uct development and strategy. In his previous work\, Liam directed and pr
esented TV shows with the Discovery Channel and various Chinese television
networks\, exploring traditional lifestyles and changing cultures\, from
the jungles of Indonesia to the steppes of Kazakhstan.
