DESCRIPTION:Prof. Kevin Corley\, Arizona State University\n"Semantic Learn
ing: The Empirical Pursuit of the Intangible"\n\nAbstract\n\nOrganizationa
l learning is one of the key topics in organization study\, but because mo
st research has mainly explored more salient forms of learning\, we know s
urprisingly little about its more subtle forms. Furthermore\, we know even
less about the interplay of subtle and salient forms of learning over tim
 e. To develop insight into this important\, but under-investigated domain\
 , we conducted a 10-year life-cycle study of an organization’s subtle le
arning activities. We focus more on the subtle\, semantically based realm
by explicating how organizational transitions occurred when either key lab
els or the meanings of the labels associated with organizational identity
underwent change. Overall\, the study not only demonstrates the importance
of accounting for subtle learning\, but also reveals some of the importan
t linkages between the subtle and salient realms of learning.\n
