DESCRIPTION:Prof Xavier Martin\, Tilburg University\nSeminar at the Manage
ment of Technology & Entrepreneurship Institute\n\nFrom invention breadth
to impact: Effects of experience and mindfulness\n\nAbstract:\nOrganizatio
ns create impactful inventions when they combine disparate strands of tech
nology in their corporate R&D. We theorize that when undertaking complex i
nventive efforts\, characterized by high breadth\, i.e. drawing on multipl
e and diverse technology components\, an organization's propensity towards
impactful inventions will be moderated by its stock of experience with re
combining such components\, and by the focus of its inventive search. Buil
ding on learning transfer theory\, we argue that the complexity and causal
ambiguity of higher-breadth projects is such that experience with similar
inventive efforts will be a poorer guide\, comparatively reducing their i
nventive impact\; however\, this effect can be attenuated by the degree of
focus of an organization's inventive efforts. Using a longitudinal datase
t of patents from the photographic imaging industry\, we find support for
 our predictions.
