DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mirko Winkler\, Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute
(Swiss TPH)\, an associated institute of University of Basel\n\nTrained i
n Environmental Sciences (MSc ETH)\, Epidemiology (PhD) and Clinical Tropi
cal Medicine (DTM&H)\, Mirko Winkler is a Scientist and Public Health Spec
ialist at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH). Mirk
o considers himself an Environmental Epidemiologist and is thus concerned
with the study of environmental exposures that contribute to adverse healt
h conditions and the identification of public health interventions to mana
ge associated risks. His current research activities have two foci. One is
on health impact assessment (HIA) of large infrastructure development pro
jects in low- and middle-income countries\, particularly extractive indust
ries\, renewable energy projects and water resources developments. The oth
er is on microbial and chemical risk assessment in the context of agricult
ure\, sanitation planning and urbanization.\nMirko Winkler from the Swiss
Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel will give a Talk about his o
ngoing work on Health and integrated impact assessments.\n\nAbstract:\nHea
lth impact assessment (HIA) is an interdisciplinary approach that aims at
predicting and managing potential positive and negative health effects of
policies\, programmes\, and projects on affected communities and populatio
ns. HIA has been developed over the past two decades and became an integra
l part of public health policies of many governments in countries with a h
igh human development index (HDI). However\, in many low- and middle-HDI c
ountries\, where two-third of the world’s population are now concentrate
d\, HIA is still the exception rather than the norm. In view of the high b
urden of diseases and pronounced health inequalities in tropical areas\, t
his is a concern. Furthermore\, it is anticipated that major drivers of gl
obal change (e.g. population growth and urbanization\, increasing demand f
or natural resources and regional climate change) will have severe health
implications\, particularly in the developing world.\nIn this seminar\, Dr
. Mirko Winkler will introduce the concept of HIA in combination with rese
arch designs that aim at integrated impact assessment for identifying more
holistic solutions. Concepts and research frameworks will be introduced a
gainst the background of two case studies from Sierra Leone (HIA of a larg
e biofuel project) and Costa Rica (integrated impact assessment of pestici
de use in small-scale organic and conventional famers). The presentation w
ill close with reflections on sustainability impact assessment from an HIA
  perspective.\n
