DESCRIPTION:Dr. Endre Horvath\, Laboratory of Nanostructures and Novel El
ectronic Materials EPFL\nThe discovery of photocatalytic water splitting a
nd photocatalysis dates back to the 1970s. Since then\, several semiconduc
tor nanoparticles have been found to have remarkable photocatalytic activi
ty to eliminate health-threatening bacteria\, viruses\, worms and persiste
nt\, bioaccumulative organic water pollutants as pharmaceuticals\, pestici
des and endocrine disruptors. Surprisingly\, despite significant research
efforts\, studies have mainly remained in the stage of laboratory experime
nts and only a limited number of products using this technology can be fou
nd on the market. Materials and devices with sufficient efficiency\, stabi
lity and low cost are yet to be demonstrated. Among the known semiconducto
r photocatalysts\, titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most popular owing to it
s excellent chemical stability\, low toxicity and low cost.\n\nI will disc
uss the main technical barriers impeding the commercialization of this tec
hnology and show several strategies as potential countermeasures to improv
e the photocatalytic efficiency of titania based solar environmental purif
ication systems. As an example\, the first prototype of a low cost\, durab
le and easy to operate solar-thermal water purification device will also b
e presented\, which allows the production of bio-hazard-free drinking wate
r from contaminated water resources.\nWe gratefully acknowledge the financ
ial support of EPFL AIT Innovation Grant and the Zeno-Karl Schindler Found
 ation.\n \n\n	Szirmai P.\, Náfrádi B.\, Arakcheeva A.\, Szilágyi E.\,

h has received his Master’s Degree in Environmental Sciences from the Un
iversity of Szeged (Hungary) in 2005. He has earned his doctorate in Chemi
stry at the same university in 2009\, where he conducted research on nanof
iber reinforced composites. After his PhD\, he joined the group of Prof. L
ászló Forró at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne as a postdoc
toral Research Fellow. His research interests include development of multi
functional nanomaterials with potential applications in the fields of phot
ocatalytic nanomaterial-based solar-thermal water and air purification sys
 tems\, waste-water or biomass powered photocatalytic fuel cells\, sensors\
, next generation photovoltaics\, thermoelectric materials and materials f
or information technology. He has received the Zeno Karl Schindler Award i
