DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Olsen is a PhD candidate in the Human-Computer Intera
ction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. She holds a B.S. in Cogniti
ve Science and Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University.
Her research investigates how to best combine collaborative and individua
l learning in an individual paced environment\, such as when using an inte
lligent tutoring system\, and how we can provide support for orchestrating
these activities within the classroom through orchestration tools. Jennif
er served on the program committee for the 5th Intelligent Support for Lea
rning in Groups Workshop and was recognized as a 2017 Siebel Scholar.\nMul
tiple social planes (i.e.\, individual\, collaborative\, whole class) are
often used within the same learning activity in the classroom. However\, l
ittle research has investigated how to best combine collaborative and indi
vidual learning. To explore this question\, it is important to be able to
support both fixed classroom activity designs\, as well as dynamic designs
where the collaborative and individual phases can be adapted to the stude
nt needs. In this talk\, I present initial studies that investigated fixed
combinations for collaborative and individual learning along with initial
research into how to model collaborative and individual learning to provi
de dynamic orchestration support for multiple social planes within the cla
 ssroom.\n
