DESCRIPTION:A wide range of experts in the domain\nSpeakers:\nAndre Studar
t (ETHZ) – 3D Printing of Bioinspired Materials\nYves Leterrier (EPFL)
 – Bioinspired Functional Polymer Composite Surfaces\nHolger Frauenrath (
EPFL) – Bioinspired Control of Multiscale Order and Disorder for High Pe
rformance Elastomers and Thermoplastics\nLuc Thevenaz (EPFL) – Sensing p
roperties of spider silk\nDimitrios Terzis (EPFL) – MeduSoil: we cultiva
te bio-cement\nIn nature\, matter gives rise to existence. So what materia
ls does nature use to make surfaces sensitive to light\, to make structure
s that are lightweight but support heavy loads\, to create membranes that
prevent evaporation\, to make structures that can break the toughest mater
ial without breaking itself? Even more puzzling is the question of how org
anisms make these materials without the use of heavy metals and intensive
chemical treatments destructive to life itself.\nThe answers often lay in
complex hierarchical structures of natural materials that are created thro
ugh chemical self-assembly\; in mixing hard inorganic materials with soft
organic proteins\; in the sophisticated nanostructures that give rise to o
rganism level functionality.\n\nHow can we start learning from these strat
egies to make more sophisticated and sustainable materials? Under the them
e of bioinspired materials\, the following researchers from EPFL and ETHZ
will speak at the upcoming Technology Aperitif jointly hosted by CCMX and
 the Bio-inspired Projects Platform
