DESCRIPTION:By : Carmela Troncoso - IMDEA Software Institute\nIC Faculty c
andidate\n\nAbstract :\nThe privacy concerns stemming from the pervasivene
ss of on-line services and mobile devices in our daily lives has put Priva
cy Technologies in the spotlight. Yet\, despite the many years of research
on these technologies it is still not well understood how design them\, e
valuate them\, and incorporate them into ICT systems in a systematic manne
 r. This lack of understanding hinders the development of solutions that en
able citizens\, governments\, and corporations to enjoy technological prog
ress without damaging our societal values.\n \nIn this talk I will provid
e an overview of my work\, which aims to provide engineers with tools to r
eason in a systematic manner both about the design and the evaluation of p
rivacy-preserving technologies. First\, I will discuss how to embed Privac
y Technologies\, in the engineering of ICT systems to provide high privacy
guarantees without detriment to functionality. Specifically\, how to use
privacy-preserving cryptographic primitives to balance privacy and service
integrity. Then\, I will provide means to tackle the design of Privacy Te
chnologies based on obfuscation or anonymization that complement cryptogra
phy-based solutions when these solutions are not applicable\, and means to
quantify the privacy properties provided by these mechanisms. Finally\, I
will discuss challenges that lie ahead regarding the development of a wel
 l-established privacy engineering discipline.\n\nBio :\nCarmela Troncoso r
eceived the Master's degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the Univ
ersity of Vigo\, Spain in 2006\; and a Ph.D. in Engineering from the KU Le
uven\, Belgium\, in 2011. Her thesis “Design and Analysis methods for Pr
ivacy Technologies” received the European Research Consortium for Inform
atics and Mathematics Security and Trust Management Best Ph.D. Thesis Awar
 d. She joins the IMDEA Software Institute in October 2015. Previously\, sh
e spent one year as a post-doctoral researcher at the COSIC Group (KULeuve
n\, Belgium) and three years at the Galician Research and Development Cent
er in Advanced Telecommunications where she was the Security and Privacy T
echnical Lead\, leading a group of engineers delivering secure and privacy
friendly solutions to the market.\n \nHer research focuses on security a
nd privacy\, with main contributions to the field of anonymous communicati
ons and location privacy. She has published more 38 refereed scientific pa
pers with more than 35 people\, in the most prestigious venues in Security
(e.g. ACM Conference on Computer Security or USENIX Security Symposium) a
nd Privacy (Privacy Enhancing Technologies) and also in JCR journals such
as the IEEE Trans.\non Information Forensics and Security. She was co-auth
or of the Gold Award to Best Student Paper at the IEEE Intl. Workshop on I
nformation Forensics and Security in 2011. She has served on more than 25
program committees of international conferences of key venues in security\
, and has reviewed articles for numerous international journals. Currently
\, she is the Caspar Bowden PET Award Chair\, and will be the Co-Editor-in
-Chief and Program Chair of PoPETs\, Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Tech
 nologies\, in 2018-2019.\n\nMore information\n
