DESCRIPTION:Dr Leslie Schoop\, Max Planck Institute for Solid State Resear
ch\, Germany\nThe realization of new quantum effects in materials strongly
depends on the discovery of compounds that can exhibit these effects. For
example\, although first predictions were made in the 70s\, the field of
topological insulators only really grew after topological materials were d
iscovered that could be studied. In order to create new materials that exh
ibit new and exotic physical properties\, knowledge about the periodic tab
le\, as well as common chemical concepts\, is extremely useful. If combine
d with electronic structure calculations\, predictions of properties in ma
terials become possible. In this talk\, I will explain how chemical concep
ts can be used to identify new materials that exhibit extraordinary physic
al properties such as high carrier mobilites\, high magnetoresistance or c
omplicated magnetism.\n\nBio:\nUndergraduate degree from University of Mai
nz (2010)\, thesis work with Claudia Felser\nPh.D. from Princeton (Jan 201
 5) thesis work with Bob Cava\nSince Jan 2015\, Minerva fast track fellow a
t MPI for solid state research in Stuttgart
