DESCRIPTION:Dr. Y Creff\, Institut Francais du Petrole - Energies Nouvelle
 s\, France.\nhttp://www.ifpenergiesnouvelles.com/\nThe presentation deals
with the control of the outlet temperature of a DOC (Diesel Oxidation Cata
lyst)\, used in diesel vehicles as a heat supplier to regenerate the parti
culate filters. The DOC is commonly modeled as a complex distributed param
eter system\, involving an energy balance and several mass balances. Such
models are not suited for control purposes. It is first shown how a contro
l model can be derived\, mainly through a drastic simplification of the ma
ss balances\, and thanks to an equivalence between advection-transfer syst
ems and advection-diffusion systems. This model correctly reproduces the o
utlet temperature response to changes in the input variables (the control
variable -inlet hydrocarbons-\, as well as the disturbances -inlet tempera
ture and gas velocity). Then\, the control approach is presented. Rejectin
g the inlet temperature variations is achieved by synchronization\, as sug
gested by properties of the advection-diffusion systems. Besides\, it is s
hown that\, although the gas velocity variations cannot be totally compens
ated for\, it is possible to limit their effect by a suited gain schedulin
 g. Experimental results show the relevance of the proposed approach.
